CUBE grows and grows and grows
In contrast to the automobile industry, which is now in crisis, the bicycle industry is still a growth industry. Since the growth boom of the electrified bicycle in this country, this can be seen quarter by quarter on the basis of the figures of the Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV). The association reported a 3.2 percent increase in sales of bicycles and e-bikes for the first half of 2019 compared with the same period of the previous year, despite the comparatively changeable weather.

How such growth manifests itself in concrete terms was seen by cycling club and R2C2 members on Monday during a factory tour at CUBE in Waldershof in Bavaria.

In the garage of his father Siegfried Pürner, a manufacturer of medical seating furniture, Marcus Pürner began building bicycles in 1992/1993 in the Pending Manufaktur factory in the Upper Palatinate, initially mountain bikes - the proximity to the Fichtelgebirge mountains ensures a high affinity for MTB in the region. About 500 bikes were produced in the first CUBE year 1993.

The first model of the company, a mountain bike of the brand Slick-Rock, can be seen in the staircase of the administration. Later, the brand was changed to "Move" due to naming problems - before the final name change to "Cube" was made because a Swiss bike magazine of the same name had been launched in the meantime.

Compared to the dimensions of the company today, CUBE was a tiny thing back then:

More than 800,000 bicycles were currently produced in Bavaria every year, covering the entire range: mountain bikes, racing bikes, trekking bikes, e-bikes and children's bikes.
The number of employees is over 500.
The CUBE bikes are sold in Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland directly through specialized bicycle dealers. In Europe and beyond CUBE has distribution partners.
In the financial year 2000, the parent company Pending System GmbH & Co.KG achieved a turnover of more than 600 million Euros according to the balance sheet - a quarter more than in the previous year, which means that CUBE has grown much faster than the overall market.
CUBE's bicycle sales grew by 16 percent in the same period.
The e-bike share is 30 percent of the total volume.
